Prior to the late 1800's art in New England was primarily folk art. Many New England antiques and heirlooms were born of necessity rather than creative inspiration. Most crafter's were untrained and self taught. Often they did not have the proper tools to work with and were forced to make tools of their own using whatever was at hand. As a result, patchwork quilts, primitive paintings, scrimshaw utensils, Shaker furniture, as well as silver and pewter dinnerware are highly valued by New England collector's today.
Presently, contemporary art is abundant in New England and comes in may forms. Sculpture, photography, painting, drawing, graphics, and art glass is sought after in small shops, galleries, museums, and festivals through out New England. Unlike it's earlier days, New England has become a hub for artist and collectors alike.
All Things New England provides artist with a place to exhibit, share, and discuss their work with others. By promoting self expression and education in the arts, we are playing an active role in preserving diversity and culture in New England art history today.
