perfect reader book coverPerfect Reader

by Maggie Pouncey

Maggie Pouncey has thoughtfully written her debut novel, Perfect Reader. Perfect Reader paints a very rich, interior picture of the main character, Flora Dempsey. The story follows Flora as the young daughter of a college President at a fictional and prestigious college in New England. We watch Flora come of age as she blossoms into a young adult on this idyllic campus and later into a grown woman, inheriting her father’s house and a collection of poetry. We learn that her father's poetry was secretly written for a girlfriend, who had, until that point, been unknown to Flora.

Maggie Pouncey creates a complicated situation to write about as Flora returns home to the college campus on which she had grown up, grappling with both her grief and her awareness of her parents having individual lives. Flora struggles in her role as Literary Executor of her father’s very personal, private poetry while the blogs clamor for publication after someone on campus leaks the information of their existence. Wonderful descriptions of poetry and appreciation of poetry are revealed throughout the novel. Perfect Reader is a richly detailed, vividly imagined first novel.  More Info

morning with mailer book coverMorning With Mailer

by Dwayne Raymond

Norman Mailer looms large on the international stage as a writer with a strong personality and perhaps looms even larger in New England, where he made his home in Provicetown, Massachusetts. Dwayne Raymond, Norman Mailer's personal assistant for the last five years of the literary giant's life, has documented their friendship in a memoir called Mornings with Mailer: A Recollection of Friendship. Dwayne Raymond's story maintains an illuminating focus on Mailer as well as Mailer's  home and work. Raymond describes the author's personal life with tender detail. This is not a dishy tell-all rather it is a respectful description of a writer at the end of his life, still enamored of his work, and proud of the charm of his town. In addition, it is also the story of Dwayne Raymond and how he  became friends with Mailer and  was mentored during their time together.More Info

Summer Shift

by Lynn Kiele Bonasia

Lynn Bonasia, a Cape Cod novelist, has a new book out this month called Summer Shift. Summer Shift is a story set behind-the-scenes at a Cape Cod clam bar. Bonasia tells the story of protagonist, Mary Hopkins, the 44 year-old clam bar owner whose restaurant suffers a setback after a young waitress is found dead at the start of the busy summer season. The emotional ramifications of that loss, combined with both strained and strengthening relationships with others around her, make this particular summer exceptional for Mary as she searches for deeper connections.Lynn Bonasia writes with ease, maintaining suspense while keeping her eye for the absurd , sharp and her characters, interesting. The shore setting, steeped in the intensely seasonal calendar, makes this a great beach or hammock read on a relaxing sunny day, and the plot will keep you hooked even longer! More Info
