Centennial House Bed & Breakfast: Northfield, Massachusetts

Cenntennial HousePurchased in 2003 by Joan and Steve Stoia, Centennial House in Northfield, Massachusetts has developed a reputation for hospitality, fine lodging and great breakfasts.  Currently celebrating its 200th anniversary, the17-room former estate offers both individual queen and king rooms and two-room suites, including family friendly options, at prices ranging from $139 to $209 per night.  All have private baths and come with the inn’s signature gourmet breakfasts that the Boston Globe said “kept us from thinking about lunch until 2 p.m. each day.”

Aside from the elegant yet un-fussy décor, what makes this B&B so special is the amount of common space available to guests.  The entire first floor of the house and a large gazebo on 2 ½  rolling acres are available for reading, relaxing and hanging out with fellow travelers.  In the afternoon, innkeepers Joan and Steve Stoia welcome new guests with fresh chocolate chip cookies, tea or lemonade.  Active in Valley affairs for over 30 years, the Stoia’s happily design custom itineraries that match their guests’ interests.  Weddings and life celebrations are a specialty of the inn.

Buying & Running a Vermont Inn: How to Get Started

vermonthouseBuying and running an inn or bed & breakfast in Vermont (or anywhere!) can be a tricky business.  While many people have a dream to run an inn in Vermont, the actuality of how to buy and run the inn can be elusive.

The Vermont love affair so many of us share began for me as a child on my grandfather’s farm in Manchester, Vermont. I later attended  Middlebury College in the 70’s and went on to become innkeeper of the Swift House Inn, also in Middlebury, Vermont, from the late 80’s through the early 2000’s. Today, I am  now able to combine both my experience in hospitality  with my skills in real estate to connect  innkeepers with inns and bed and breakfasts across the state.

The first step in connecting is helping give honest and useful advice for people who want to explore their innkeeper dream.

Nehemiah Brainerd House: Haddam, Connecticut

Nehemiah Brainerd House Nehemiah Brainerd House B&B:

Built in 1765 and situated in the historic district of Haddam on five park-like acres above the Connecticut River, the Nehemiah Brainerd House B&B offers four beautiful rooms.  Each room is luxuriously appointed with gleaming antiques, reproduction wallpapers, private baths, and views of the hills across the river and the expansive front yard.

The house was originally owned by Nehemiah Brainerd who was a member of the well known Brainerd family, early settlers in the area in the 1600’s.  He was also the nephew of the famous Christian missionary, David Brainerd.  Nehemiah died on November 8, 1807 at the age of 66 and is buried in the cemetery just down the road.

After a succession of owners, the property was purchased in 1932 by Katharine Ingham Brush.  Ms. Brush moved the house back from the road toward the river and then expanded it by adding two wings.  A best selling author and New York society gal in the 1920’s through 1940’s, Ms. Brush wrote several  novels and was dubbed the “wicked lady novelist” as her subject matter was scandalous for the day. Many of her books were turned into Hollywood screenplays starring the likes of Spencer Tracey and Jean Harlow.  The Innkeepers have been collecting her books which are on display at the Inn.
