Nehemiah Brainerd House B&B:
Built in 1765 and situated in the historic district of Haddam on five park-like acres above the Connecticut River, the
Nehemiah Brainerd House B&B offers four beautiful rooms. Each room is luxuriously appointed with gleaming antiques, reproduction wallpapers, private baths, and views of the hills across the river and the expansive front yard.
The house was originally owned by Nehemiah Brainerd who was a member of the well known Brainerd family, early settlers in the area in the 1600’s. He was also the nephew of the famous Christian missionary, David Brainerd. Nehemiah died on November 8, 1807 at the age of 66 and is buried in the cemetery just down the road.
After a succession of owners, the property was purchased in 1932 by Katharine Ingham Brush. Ms. Brush moved the house back from the road toward the river and then expanded it by adding two wings. A best selling author and New York society gal in the 1920’s through 1940’s, Ms. Brush wrote several novels and was dubbed the “wicked lady novelist” as her subject matter was scandalous for the day. Many of her books were turned into Hollywood screenplays starring the likes of Spencer Tracey and Jean Harlow. The Innkeepers have been collecting her books which are on display at the Inn.
